Barcelona Resolves Captaincy Issue with Marc-André ter Stegen

The club reinstates ter Stegen’s captaincy after a resolution regarding a medical documentation dispute.
Barcelona has officially resolved a recent dispute regarding the captaincy of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

The situation reached a critical point when the club initiated a disciplinary process against ter Stegen for not signing a medical document required by La Liga following his back surgery.

Initially, ter Stegen’s refusal to sign the document resulted in the revocation of his captaincy.

The conflict centered around Barcelona's attempt to utilize a La Liga provision that allows teams to redirect 80% of a player's wages who is sidelined for more than four months to register another player.

The club sought to register goalkeeper Juan Garcia in place of ter Stegen due to the latter's long-term absence.

On the evening of Friday, the club announced that ter Stegen had signed the necessary medical authorization, thereby enabling La Liga to acknowledge his extended absence.

As a result, the disciplinary process was canceled, and he was reinstated as team captain immediately.

A statement from the club confirmed that ter Stegen had signed the document allowing medical data to be processed in La Liga following his surgery, leading to the closure of the disciplinary case and the restoration of his captaincy.

Prior to the official announcement, ter Stegen had alluded to an intention to de-escalate the situation through a personal post, indicating a willingness to mend relationships within the club.

With the signing complete, it appears that both parties aim to move forward and restore harmony.

This development will enable Barcelona to register Juan Garcia, and in conjunction with the anticipated departure of Inigo Martinez to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the club may make additional player registrations ahead of their upcoming league match against Mallorca next week.
