Six Communes in Alpes-Maritimes Declared Natural Disaster Zones Following Severe Weather Events
Local authorities confirm disaster status for municipalities affected by heavy rainfall and flooding in October 2024.
The prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes has officially recognized six municipalities as being in a state of natural disaster following significant weather disruptions in October 2024. The affected communes include Biot, Cipières, Gattières, Gourdon, Levens, and Roquefort-les-Pins.
This declaration was formalized by a ministerial order dated March 24, 2025, and published in the official journal on April 3, 2025.
The severe weather incidents occurred between October 16 and 18, 2024, when the region experienced substantial flooding and mudslides.
During this period, the Alpes-Maritimes department was placed under a red alert for 'rain-flood' and thunderstorms, prompting local authorities to take precautionary measures, including the closure of all schools on October 17 in anticipation of the storm.
In addition to the aforementioned municipalities, Roquefort-les-Pins received disaster status due to flooding and mudslides that transpired between January 31 and February 1, 2025. Meanwhile, Biot's designation as a natural disaster zone was attributed to land movements that occurred between February 1 and February 3, 2024.
Residents of the affected communes now have a period of 30 days to report the incidents to their insurance companies, allowing them to seek indemnification for damages incurred as a result of the natural events.
