Call for Counter-Demonstration in Paris Against Far-Right Amid Support Rally for Marine Le Pen
La France Insoumise and Ecologists plan gathering on April 6, coinciding with the National Rally's event supporting Le Pen after her legal condemnation.
La France Insoumise (LFI) and the Ecologists have called for a rally on April 6, 2025, in Place de la République, Paris, to protest against the far-right.
This demonstration coincides with a gathering organized by the National Rally (RN) in support of Marine Le Pen following her judicial condemnation for misappropriation of public funds in connection with the European parliamentary assistants affair.
In a statement on social media platform X, the LFI, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, urged citizens to not let the far-right dictate the law, emphasizing the sanctity of the rule of law.
Marine Tondelier, the national secretary of the Ecologists, echoed this sentiment, calling for attendance to remind everyone of the importance of the rule of law.
The RN announced on April 1 that it would hold a significant rally on the same date to support Marine Le Pen after her recent conviction, which includes a four-year prison sentence, two years of which are to be served under an electronic bracelet, a fine of €100,000, and a five-year ineligibility period with immediate enforcement.
Le Pen, who plans to appeal the ruling, is expected to speak at the RN gathering.
The mobilization against the far-right has received support from several political and civil organizations, including Génération.s, founded by Benoît Hamon, which cited concerns over the far-right's attacks on justice and the rule of law.
The Solidaires union has also expressed intentions to participate, highlighting the urgency of opposing the RN’s presence.
The Union of High School Students and left-aligned youth organizations are anticipated to join the event, as well as associations such as Attac and the antifascist group Jeune Garde.
Conversely, the presidential party Renaissance, having planned a meeting for some time, will host its event at Cité du cinéma in Saint-Denis, expected to draw approximately 5,000 attendees.
This meeting aims to highlight a 'new chapter' within the party following Gabriel Attal’s leadership and will feature key figures connected to the government, including Édouard Philippe and François Bayrou.
As the National Rally intends to decry Le Pen’s sentencing, the RN leadership will include statements from figures such as Louis Aliot, Jordan Bardella, and Eric Ciotti during the rally.
The political landscape leading up to this weekend is marked by overlapping demonstrations, raising significant attention regarding the ongoing political tensions surrounding far-right movements and their opposition in France.
