SoftBank heads the investment round, assessing OpenAI's value at $300 billion, as the firm aims to enhance its AI research and infrastructure.
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has successfully concluded a $40 billion funding round, marking the largest sum ever collected by a private technology firm.
This latest funding round values OpenAI at $300 billion, nearly three times the former record held by any private tech company.
SoftBank spearheaded the investment with a $30 billion stake, joined by other investors such as Microsoft, Coatue, Altimeter, and Thrive.
The capital will be utilized to 'extend the frontiers of AI research even further' and enhance OpenAI's computing capabilities.
Around $18 billion of this investment is designated for the Stargate project, a collaborative initiative involving SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle.
This investment comes with stipulations, including a mandate for OpenAI to transition to a for-profit model by December 31, 2025, or risk having SoftBank's investment reduced to $20 billion.
OpenAI intends to leverage this new funding to stimulate growth, having recently announced that ChatGPT boasts over 500 million users, reflecting a 100 million increase from the previous month.
The organization also anticipates that its revenue will triple to $12.7 billion by year-end.
