Record Number of Calls to Domestic Violence Helpline in France
The 3919 helpline reports over 100,000 calls in 2024 amid rising concerns over domestic violence.
The 3919 helpline, dedicated to supporting women victims of violence, particularly domestic abuse, reported a record year in 2024, receiving over 100,000 calls.
This figure represents the first time that the number of calls handled has surpassed the 100,000 mark, according to the National Federation for Women’s Solidarity (FNSF), which operates the free, round-the-clock helpline.
In a detailed report, the FNSF indicated that 14% of the women who called the helpline reported death threats at the time of the incidents.
Furthermore, 75% of callers reporting domestic violence were parents, with 98% stating that their children experience indirect violence and 49% reporting direct violence against them.
The Federation estimates that approximately 21,880 children are affected by the domestic violence cases reported through the helpline.
In light of this surge in calls and the need for support services, the FNSF has urged the government to enhance its financial commitment to local organizations that assist women escaping violence.
They warned that without sustainable funding, local associations may be unable to provide the essential specialized support required for women and children rebuilding their lives.
Additionally, official statistics reveal that more than 270,000 domestic violence victims, predominantly women, were recorded by law enforcement in 2023. In that same year, the country witnessed 96 cases of domestic femicide, underlining the ongoing severity of the issue.
The alarming increase in calls to the 3919 helpline reflects a growing awareness and willingness among victims to seek help but also highlights the ongoing challenge of providing adequate support and resources for those affected by domestic violence in France.
