U.S. President Donald Trump heightens tensions with the European Union, indicating possible tariffs in light of trade imbalances.
U.S. President
Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on European Union products, characterizing the bloc’s trade practices as 'an atrocity.' In remarks made on Sunday, Trump pointed to a trade deficit exceeding $300 billion, although official data indicates that the U.S. goods trade deficit with the EU in 2023 was about €155.8 billion, balanced by a €104 billion surplus in services.
Trump's comments, which also targeted the U.K. regarding its trade policies, highlight escalating tensions surrounding global trade relations.
Having imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China earlier in the week, the U.S. president has faced international criticism.
A spokesperson for the European Commission cautioned that the EU would retaliate strongly if tariffs are imposed unfairly on EU goods.
