Preparations Underway for Papal Conclave Following Pope Francis's Passing

Memorial and succession planning are set in motion after the death of Pope Francis.
Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2024, preparations are underway for a papal conclave that will elect his successor.

The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, attracting global dignitaries, including leaders such as former United States President Donald Trump and Argentina's President Javier Milei, who will gather in Rome to pay their final respects.

The conclave to select the new pontiff is expected to commence between fifteen to twenty days after the funeral, likely during the second week of May.

Pope Francis appointed approximately 80% of the cardinals who will participate in the conclave, raising questions about how his influence will affect the selection of the next pope.

Many of the cardinals hail from dioceses with limited media visibility and have had minimal interactions with each other, complicating assumptions about continuity or alignment with Francis’s reforms.

The College of Cardinals comprises 135 members, marking it as the largest conclave in the history of the Catholic Church.

In the days preceding the conclave, general congregations will be held, where cardinals will engage in discussions that allow them to introduce themselves and advocate for potential candidates known as "papabili."

The dynamics of the upcoming election will be shaped significantly by geographical and ideological factors, as well as the ages of the cardinals involved.

As the composition of the College has shifted, the number of European cardinals has declined, now representing just over a third of the total.

They are entrusted with a two-thirds majority requirement to elect a new pope, which they may struggle to achieve if divisions among them persist.

The role of European cardinals is critically relevant, as Europe faces declining religious adherence.

There are speculations regarding whether the next pope will continue Pope Francis's focus on inclusivity and outreach to marginalized communities or take a more traditional European-centric approach to address the challenges faced in the region.

As the Church faces significant transformations, the geographic representation of the next pope will serve as a vital indicator of the future direction of the Catholic Church.

The conclave proceedings, traditionally held in the Sistine Chapel, will ultimately determine the Church's leadership and vision in a rapidly changing global context.
