The popular messaging app will soon feature ads in its 'Status' section, marking a significant shift in its business model.
Meta Platforms, Inc. announced on Monday that WhatsApp will soon introduce advertising, a notable shift for the globally favored messaging application that has largely avoided advertisements since its acquisition by the social media giant in 2014. Until this announcement, WhatsApp maintained a business model nearly free from ads, contrasting with its sibling platforms such as
Facebook and Instagram.
WhatsApp has been favored for its user-friendly interface and features including voice and video calls, voice messages, end-to-end encryption, and its perceived commercial neutrality.
Previously, promotional messages were limited to WhatsApp Business users communicating with consenting contacts, along with certain experimental ads tested in selected markets.
The newly proposed advertising spaces will solely be featured in the 'Status' tab, which includes 'Statuses' and 'Channels,' utilized daily by approximately 1.5 billion people around the globe.
New functionalities will offer paid subscriptions to specific Channels, promoted Channels in the discovery directory, and ads integrated within Statuses, akin to Instagram Stories.
Meta stated, 'We have been talking for years about our intention to create a business that does not interrupt your personal conversations, and we believe that the Status tab is the appropriate place for these new tools.' Users who use WhatsApp exclusively for personal communication will not experience changes, as the Status tab can be disabled in the app's settings.
Nikila Srinivasan, a vice president at Meta, clarified that personal messages, calls, and statuses will remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that no one, including Meta, can access or eavesdrop on them.
She emphasized that these communications will never be utilized for advertising purposes.
Furthermore, Meta committed to not selling or sharing users' phone numbers with advertisers and assured that information from personal discussions, calls, or group chats will not be used for ad targeting.
Advertisements displayed in the Status tab will rely exclusively on basic data such as approximate location, device language, or user activity within the messaging app.
Meta seeks to generate revenue from WhatsApp's substantial user base, which exceeds two billion monthly active users.
Analysts have speculated for some time that the California-based company would ultimately incorporate advertising into the messaging service, given its user size and engagement rates.
The timeline for the rollout of these new functionalities has yet to be announced.
