Oscar Piastri secures victory ahead of teammate Lando Norris, extending his lead in the World Championship.
In a commanding performance, McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finished first and second, respectively, at the Miami Grand Prix, the sixth race of the Formula 1 season.
Piastri's victory marks his fourth win this season, reinforcing his position at the top of the World Championship standings.
George Russell of
Mercedes secured the third podium spot, finishing over thirty seconds behind the leaders.
The race commenced with Max Verstappen starting from pole position alongside Norris.
As the cars approached the first turn, Verstappen asserted his dominance, maintaining the lead while forcing Norris off the track.
Norris, who fell to sixth place due to the incident, began a relentless pursuit, which was temporarily hindered by a virtual safety car following a collision between drivers Jack Doohan and Liam Lawson.
Upon the restart on lap four, Verstappen initially pulled away, but Piastri quickly made his move, passing Antonelli and setting his sights on the leader.
Norris also advanced, overtaking Sainz, Russell, and Antonelli to rejoin the frontrunners.
The ensuing battle between Verstappen, Piastri, and Norris was marked by intense competition over 19 laps.
During the first ten laps, Verstappen successfully defended against numerous overtaking attempts by Piastri, but ultimately succumbed to the McLaren driver on lap 14. Following this, Piastri established a significant lead as Norris quickly caught up to Verstappen, who appeared to struggle for pace approaching the midpoint of the race.
On lap 26, as pit stops became frequent, Verstappen switched to hard tires in an attempt to secure third place.
However, on lap 29, an engine failure on Ollie Bearman's Haas triggered another virtual safety car.
This development proved advantageous for both McLaren drivers and Russell, who had been positioned fifth before the incident but emerged third following their pit stops.
This race strategy allowed McLaren to extend their lead as Piastri cruised toward his fourth victory of the season.
Norris secured second place, while Russell culminated the podium.
In terms of driver standings, Russell's third-place finish was a significant gain as Verstappen, who had initially started in pole position, finished fourth.
Alex Albon of Williams showcased a strong performance, finishing fifth, while Carlos Sainz crossed the line in ninth place, indicating challenges for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton in eighth and Charles Leclerc in seventh.
Among the French drivers, Pierre Gasly faced difficulties throughout the race, finishing in 17th place with his Alpine, while Isack Hadjar narrowly missed scoring points in 11th.
Esteban Ocon concluded the race in 12th position.
The next races will see teams head to Europe for a series of events, including Imola, Monaco, and Spain, as the competitive landscape shifts.
