The Dutch driver secures his fourth win of the season, demonstrating exceptional racing skills against McLaren rivals.
Max Verstappen, the Dutch four-time Formula One world champion, achieved a decisive victory at the Imola Grand Prix in Italy on May 18, 2025, marking the seventh race of the 2025 Formula One World Championship.
Starting from second position on the grid, Verstappen quickly overtook pole-sitter Oscar Piastri of McLaren at the beginning of the race, effectively taking the lead with a late braking maneuver that left Piastri unable to defend his position.
As the race progressed, Verstappen and his Red Bull team, powered by Honda, consistently expanded their lead, opting to extend the life of their medium tires while many competitors, including Piastri, made early pit stops for hard tires.
This strategy became increasingly advantageous as those who pitted found themselves mired in traffic, unable to make significant timing gains.
On lap 47 of the 63-lap race, Verstappen’s commanding lead of approximately twenty seconds was neutralized when a safety car was deployed following the retirement of 18-year-old Italian driver Kimi Antonelli from
Mercedes.
The safety car period catalyzed a highly competitive final segment of the race, with teams on fresh tires battling against those on worn rubber.
In the closing laps, Verstappen once again showcased his driving prowess, maintaining his position ahead of the pack.
Behind him, Lando Norris, who also benefited from fresh tires, managed to reclaim second place from his teammate Piastri, who finished third.
Lewis Hamilton, moving up from a starting position of 12th to 4th during the safety car period, provided an exhilarating performance in front of enthusiastic Italian fans at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit.
Post-race, Verstappen remarked on his performance, noting a marked improvement since earlier in the weekend and praising the execution of his team’s strategy, particularly during pit stops.
The McLaren drivers acknowledged the dominance of Red Bull on the day, with Norris stating, "They were too strong for us today,” while Piastri conceded, “It was not our best Sunday.”
Despite the outcome, Piastri retains the lead in the drivers’ championship standings with a 13-point advantage over Norris and a 22-point lead over Verstappen, with victories in 2025 awarding 25 points each.
In the constructors’ standings, McLaren leads with 279 points, well ahead of
Mercedes at 147 and Red Bull at 131.
Among French drivers competing in the race, Isack Hadjar from Racing Bulls secured a ninth-place finish, while Pierre Gasly from Alpine placed 13th and Esteban Ocon from Haas was unable to finish the race.
Franco Colapinto, making his debut with Alpine, completed the race in 16th position after encountering gravel traps during the event.
