The French MEP announces her participation in a Pride event that has been prohibited by the Hungarian government.
Manon Aubry, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from La France Insoumise (LFI), has declared her intention to participate in a Pride March in Budapest, despite it being banned by the Hungarian government.
In a video shared on X, she emphasized the importance of solidarity for LGBTI rights, stating that she would march on June 28, 2023, proclaiming, 'The fascists will not stop us: I will proudly march in Budapest for LGBTI rights!'
In April 2023, the Hungarian Parliament passed an amendment to the constitution with significant support, reinforcing the prohibition of Pride events in the country.
This governmental action has drawn criticism from various LGBTI advocacy groups, who have announced their plans to proceed with organizing the Pride March regardless of the official ban.
Aubry characterized the situation in Hungary as indicative of broader threats to LGBTI rights across Europe.
She established a comparison between the Hungarian legislation under Prime Minister
Viktor Orban and the political stance of France's National Rally (Rassemblement National).
In her message, she posed the rhetorical question, 'What if the Pride in Paris were banned?' highlighting her view that the rights of individuals to express their identities should not face legislative challenges.
In her video, Aubry further expressed that the march represents a struggle for the freedom to love whom one chooses and to live openly as one’s true self.
'On June 28, in Budapest, we will wave the LGBT colors, despite
Viktor Orban, Jordan Bardella, the far-right, and all reactionaries,' she asserted.
This is not the first instance in which Aubry has engaged in political actions outside of France; she previously visited Poland in late April 2023 with LFI parliamentary leader Mathilde Panot.
During that visit, they distributed nearly 300 abortion pills to a pro-abortion organization in Warsaw, which she defended as part of her duty as a politician to resist unjust laws.
