Romain Roy, CEO of Roy Energie, halts significant vehicle purchase in protest against U.S. tariffs and business practices.
Romain Roy, the director of Roy Energie, a company specializing in photovoltaic solutions located in Toury, France, has made headlines for canceling an order of 15
Tesla vehicles, originally placed three months earlier.
This decision comes amidst escalating trade tensions between the United States and Europe, particularly following the introduction of additional tariffs by the Trump administration, amounting to 25% on European imports.
According to a recent Ipsos survey, 70% of French citizens express a willingness to boycott American products in response to these tariffs.
Roy, who also serves as the vice-president of Orléans Métropole, responsible for transportation, articulated his stance, stating, "I do not want any euro to leave my company to enrich this man," referring to
Tesla's CEO,
Elon Musk.
The decision to shift away from
Tesla is seen as strategic, aiming to support European manufacturers such as Peugeot,
Mercedes, and Volkswagen, which will now supply Roy's firm with electric vehicles competing in similar performance categories but at an average price increase of 10,000 euros per vehicle.
This translates to an additional cost of 150,000 euros for the replacement order.
Roy emphasizes a commitment to purchase vehicles primarily manufactured in France or Europe going forward.
His decision reflects wider discontent with U.S. economic policies and practices, particularly those implemented during the Trump administration.
Roy criticized these policies, describing them as aggressive and detrimental to European economic interests, noting issues such as environmental concerns and geopolitical aggressiveness towards Europe, Canada, and Mexico.
Additionally, Roy has previously taken a stand against consumer practices he views as negative, having already banned Amazon from his company due to concerns over overconsumption.
Since announcing the cancellation of the
Tesla order, Roy has received a substantial amount of communication, with nearly 5,000 emails, comments, and social media posts, largely positive in sentiment.
However, he has acknowledged that among more hostile responses, many originate from anonymous accounts.
Roy believes his actions have sparked a wider discussion on consumer power and corporate practices.
