A man's attempt to sell his car online ends in financial loss after falling victim to a cheque fraud scheme.
On April 26, a man identified as Cédric from Cannes encountered a fraudulent scheme while attempting to sell his 2019
Mercedes A-Class.
Cédric, having recently received a promotion, listed his vehicle for 25,500 euros on the classified ads platform Leboncoin.
He was contacted by an individual named Guillaume, who expressed interest in purchasing the car.
Following a meeting, Guillaume provided Cédric with a so-called ‘bank cheque,’ a payment method typically considered secure for high-value transactions between private sellers.
Prior to finalizing the sale, Cédric took precautions by verifying the authenticity of the cheque with the issuing bank, which confirmed that everything appeared in order.
Consequently, the transaction proceeded, and Cédric handed over the car, seeing Guillaume drive away contentedly.
However, a few days later, he discovered that the funds had disappeared from his account.
The cheque was later determined to be counterfeit; a mere replica, leading to the cancellation of the transaction by the bank.
Cédric utilized a vehicle tracking application and was able to locate the car in Béziers.
Authorities apprehended a young man in possession of the vehicle, who was subsequently released, believed to be an unwitting buyer.
Reports indicate that the car was then resold for 12,000 euros in cash, representing half of its original sale price.
Frustrated by the situation, Cédric expressed disappointment with the lack of support from both his bank and insurance company.
Despite holding comprehensive insurance, he found that the policy did not cover losses due to fraud.
As a result, he has opted to engage a lawyer, asserting that the bank failed to uphold its advisory responsibilities.
In light of his experience, Cédric now recommends using instant bank transfers to ensure secure transactions, noting that Leboncoin offers a safety feature allowing for the escrow of funds while verifying the bank transfer during exchanges.
Through his informative videos on social media, Cédric has received numerous messages from other victims, revealing a broader issue with such scams.
He remarked on the surprising number of people who have shared similar experiences, contradicting his initial belief that he was alone in this predicament.
