France’s Largest Wildfire This Summer Leaves One Dead and Nine Injured
Blaze scorched 13,000 hectares in Aude region, largest to date
A fast‑spreading wildfire in the Corbières hills of southern France has claimed one life and injured nine others, including seven firefighters, as it tore through more than 13,000 hectares—making it the largest fire of the summer.
The blaze originated near Ribaute in the Aude department and quickly engulfed rural woodland, damaging or destroying at least 25 homes and forcing full evacuations in multiple villages and campsites.
Approximately 1,820 firefighters supported by water bombers continue battling the blaze under hot, windy conditions while authorities warn containment could take several days.
President Macron has mobilised national resources, and Prime Minister Bayrou is scheduled to visit the hard‑hit area.
