Bruno Retailleau Critiques the Syndicat de la Magistrature Amid Controversy over Judicial Neutrality
Interior Minister questions impartiality of left-leaning judges during discussion on judicial decisions related to Marine Le Pen.
Bruno Retailleau, the French Interior Minister, publicly criticized the left-leaning Syndicat de la magistrature during a broadcast on France 2. He asserted that while the majority of magistrates in France maintain neutrality, there are instances where certain union organizations may exhibit bias.
Specifically, he referred to the Syndicat de la magistrature, which gained notoriety for its involvement in the 'Mur des cons' incident and its participation in the Fête de l’Humanité.
The minister's comments followed a judicial ruling that rendered Marine Le Pen ineligible for public office, which has been met with a wave of criticism from far-right factions.
These critics have accused the judiciary of making politically motivated decisions.
The 'Mur des cons' was discovered in 2013 and featured a display of photographs depicting various right-wing politicians, magistrates, journalists, and family members of crime victims within the syndicate's offices.
The former president of the Syndicat de la magistrature faced legal repercussions for public defamation related to this incident, which some public opinion segments interpret as indicative of bias within the judicial system.
Retailleau emphasized the gravity of the situation by questioning the acceptability of the 'Mur des cons,' asking rhetorically whether it had indeed occurred.
He reiterated his disapproval, stating that it is unacceptable for political figures and victims’ family members to be targeted in such a manner by a judicial association.
The minister further reaffirmed the importance of judicial independence and impartiality in justice, emphasizing that the judiciary must uphold these principles without bias.
