SNCF and Trenitalia Announce Resumption of Paris-Milan Train Services
The Paris-Milan route to reopen following infrastructure restoration after August landslide.
SNCF and Trenitalia have announced the resumption of their train services between Paris and Milan, a vital rail link connecting France and Italy, following a prolonged suspension.
Alain Krakovitch, director of TGV-Intercités, confirmed on social media that services would restart on March 31, 2025. Trenitalia subsequently declared on their platform that their trains for the Paris-Italy route would resume on April 1, 2025.
The reintroduction of these services comes after extensive repair work due to a significant landslide on August 27, 2023, in the Maurienne Valley.
The landslide, caused by heavy rains following a dry period, resulted in the collapse of a cliff section, depositing thousands of tons of rock onto a crucial 300-meter tunnel.
This incident severely disrupted rail traffic between the two countries.
To maintain connectivity after the incident, SNCF implemented a replacement service involving a bus journey from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Oulx, followed by the remaining journey in TGV. This interim measure increased travel time from the usual six to seven hours to between seven and a half to nine hours.
In standard operations, the rail line accommodates around 30 freight trains and 5 to 6 high-speed service round trips daily, alongside regional TER services in the Maurienne Valley.
Repair efforts included clearing 5,000 cubic meters of unstable rock through measures such as helicopter water drops and dynamiting.
Once these preliminary efforts were successful, further work secured the cliff and restored the rail infrastructure, setting the stage for the return of both SNCF and Trenitalia's trains.
SNCF Voyageurs plans to offer three daily round trips, while Trenitalia has scheduled two daily round trips, which will enhance the connectivity between the two major European destinations.
