Simone Inzaghi Resigns as Head Coach of Inter Milan Following Champions League Defeat
The departure comes three days after a significant loss to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Inter Milan without a trophy for the season.
Simone Inzaghi has parted ways with Inter Milan, announced just three days after the team suffered a heavy defeat in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, losing 5-0. Although this defeat was a high-profile event, the club’s official statement did not cite it as the reason for Inzaghi's departure.
Inzaghi, who took over as head coach in 2021, concluded the 2024-2025 season without any trophies.
In a statement released by the club, it was highlighted that the fans, players, and staff would remember Inzaghi's great passion for the team.
Inzaghi himself expressed his emotional farewell, stating that the time had come for him to leave the club after four years in which he had given his all.
During his tenure, Inzaghi led Inter Milan to notable successes including two Coppa Italia titles in 2022 and 2023, and the Scudetto, or league title, in 2024. However, the club has not won the prestigious Champions League since 2010. They came close to clinching the title in 2023, narrowly losing to Manchester City by a single goal.
The 2024-2025 season proved disappointing for Inzaghi, as his team aimed for a treble of domestic cups, league title, and European glory.
Instead, they experienced several setbacks: a semi-final exit in the Coppa Italia on April 23 following a 3-0 defeat to city rivals AC Milan, finishing second in Serie A by just one point to Napoli, and the historic defeat in the Champions League final.
Additionally, Inter Milan was defeated by AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup final in January.
As the club prepares to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup from June 14 to July 13 in the United States, the identity of Inzaghi's successor remains unannounced.
The team’s opening match in the tournament is scheduled against Monterrey on June 17. Meanwhile, Inzaghi is expected to take a position with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, which will begin its campaign against Real Madrid in the same competition the following day.
