France Seeks to Regulate Influencers Amidst Ongoing Tensions with Social Media Platforms

Minister Aurore Bergé holds discussions with major social media networks to address moderation issues and influencer regulations.
French Minister Delegate for Digital Affairs, Aurore Bergé, convened meetings with leaders of prominent social media platforms on June 3, 2023, to discuss the pressing need for enhanced moderation of content and regulations concerning influencers.

This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy by the French government to address concerns about the influence of social media on public opinion and its implications for consumer protection, particularly in the realm of fast fashion.

The discussions highlight the government's intent to create a framework that ensures influencer marketing complies with established guidelines to protect consumers and promote responsible advertising practices.

Minister Bergé's actions have sparked criticism from both the social media platforms and the Minister of Digital Affairs, Clara Chappaz.

The tension reflects the delicate balance the government seeks to strike between regulating the evolving digital landscape and maintaining a cooperative relationship with social media companies.

In another significant move, Aylo, the operator of adult content websites, announced it would suspend operations of its sites, including Pornhub, YouPorn, and Redtube, in France as of June 4, 2023. This decision is part of ongoing negotiations regarding the regulation of adult content online in France, demonstrating a broader trend of increased scrutiny over digital platforms and their responsibilities in content moderation.

Furthermore, in a bid to address online safety, Chappaz has proposed measures to limit teenagers' access to social media, a contentious approach aimed at protecting youth in the digital environment.

This proposal has added another layer to the discussions regarding the responsibility of social media platforms in protecting vulnerable users.

As these developments unfold, public figures and influencers, such as Tibo InShape, are increasingly becoming central to discussions about the role of social media in politics and education.

In a recent event, Tibo InShape engaged with President Emmanuel Macron on the importance of physical education in schools, underscoring the significant intersection of social media influence and national discourse in France.
