The European Parliament member Rima Hassan announces a humanitarian mission to Gaza amidst ongoing tensions and previous expulsion from Israel.
Rima Hassan, a Member of the European Parliament representing La France insoumise, has declared her intention to travel to Gaza by boat, accompanied by climate activist Greta Thunberg.
Hassan detailed her plans for the mission on social media, urging her supporters to mobilize ahead of the expedition scheduled to depart on Sunday.
This initiative comes three months after she was expelled from Israel upon her arrival there in February, where Israeli security forces compelled her to leave the country on a return flight to Paris.
The stated aim of this forthcoming visit is to draw attention to what Hassan describes as a humanitarian blockade and a genocide occurring in Gaza, as well as to highlight the impunity enjoyed by the Israeli state.
Hassan has called for heightened public engagement to support their mission.
Greta Thunberg, known for her environmental advocacy, also attempted to reach Gaza earlier this year.
In May, a ship was organized by the Coalition of the Freedom Flotilla, which advocates against the blockade of Gaza, to transport several activists, including Thunberg.
However, that attempt was thwarted when the vessel was reportedly damaged shortly before departure, with activists alleging that Israeli drone attacks were responsible for the damage.
The upcoming journey has sparked discussions around international awareness of the ongoing situation in Gaza and the broader consequences of geopolitical tensions in the region.
