PSG and Kylian Mbappé Locked in Extended Dispute Over Unpaid Wages
Salary Dispute Between PSG and Star Player Kylian Mbappé May Extend Over Several Years Amid Legal Proceedings
The financial dispute between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and its star player Kylian Mbappé over unpaid salaries and bonuses has entered a complex stage likely to extend over several years.
The case, involving claims of 55 million euros by Mbappé, 26, hinges on salary and bonus commitments specified in his contract, which was endorsed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).
In August 2024, Mbappé approached the LFP’s legal committee following PSG's refusal to pay the claimed amount.
Since then, both the LFP's legal committee, on 12 September 2024, and the LFP's joint appeals commission, on 25 October, directed PSG to settle the outstanding amounts, citing a lack of contractual amendments agreed upon by both parties.
PSG, however, contends that an informal agreement existed in the summer of 2023, under which Mbappé would waive a portion of his salary.
The club argues that Mbappé’s subsequent actions were allegedly unfaithful to this understanding, leading to potential financial harm that could justify compensation.
Legal procedures advanced in December 2024 when PSG initiated legal action at the Paris Judicial Court against both the LFP and Mbappé.
This move effectively pauses the disciplinary proceedings concerning the payment backlog, adding further delays to its resolution.
The ongoing procedure reflects the complexities often inherent in high-profile contractual disputes within professional sports.
