Primark CEO Resigns Amid Investigation into Misconduct Allegation
Paul Marchant steps down following an external inquiry into his behavior towards a female employee.
Paul Marchant, the Chief Executive Officer of budget clothing retailer Primark, has resigned from his position following an investigation into his behavior towards a woman, according to a statement released by the company’s parent organization, Associated British Foods (ABF), on March 31, 2025.
The inquiry was launched by ABF and involved external legal counsel, prompted by an allegation regarding Marchant's conduct in a social setting.
The statement indicated that Marchant had cooperated with the investigation and acknowledged an error in judgment, accepting that his actions fell short of the standards expected by the company.
Marchant has also issued apologies to the individual involved, the ABF board, his colleagues at Primark, and others connected to the company.
In a response to these developments, George Weston, Chief Executive of ABF, expressed his profound disappointment, emphasizing that responsible conduct is essential for building and managing a sustainable business.
ABF further noted its commitment to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment where all employees and stakeholders are treated with dignity and respect.
The company expressed support for the individual who raised the allegation regarding Marchant’s behavior.
Marchant has been at the helm of Primark since 2009. In the interim, Eoin Tonge, ABF's Chief Financial Officer, will take over as acting CEO.
