The 88-year-old pontiff has been receiving treatment for bronchitis since last week.
Pope Francis was admitted to Rome's Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Friday for the treatment of bronchitis, a condition he has been suffering from for the past week.
According to a statement from the Vatican, the pope was hospitalized to undergo necessary diagnostic examinations and continue his ongoing treatment for bronchitis in a medical setting.
The Agostino Gemelli Hospital features a specially outfitted floor that includes a chapel to accommodate the pope's requirements during his stay.
Pope Francis, aged 88, experienced respiratory difficulties which affected his ability to deliver his weekly catechesis during a general audience on Wednesday.
The pontiff had requested an assistant to read his remarks, stating, "I allow myself to ask the priest to read.
I, with my bronchitis, cannot."
One week prior, he had also asked for assistance during the audience, mentioning he had a "nasty cold" which was affecting his speech.
The pope's last hospitalization occurred in June 2023 when he underwent surgery related to his intestinal health.
Since 2022, he has been using a wheelchair due to ongoing pain in his knee and often relies on a cane when standing.
In recent months,
Pope Francis has faced challenges that have required him to delegate the reading of his speeches and occasionally cancel participation in events due to health issues.
