Police Officer to Stand Trial for Murder Following Fatal Shooting of Teen in Paris Suburb
The incident involving 17-year-old Nahel sparked widespread unrest across France.
PARIS - A police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old named Nahel during a traffic stop in a Paris suburb in June 2023 will be tried for murder, according to a statement from the Nanterre public prosecutor's office.
On June 27, 2023, Nahel was shot at point-blank range by the officer during the police operation in Nanterre, which subsequently led to several nights of riots across France.
The public prosecutor's office announced that the two investigating magistrates of the Nanterre judicial court have concluded their investigation and issued an indictment order, sending the police officer to trial for intentional homicide.
The trial is anticipated to take place in the second or third quarter of 2026 before the Hauts-de-Seine Assize Court, subject to the possibility of appeals, as noted by the prosecutor's office.
As of now, lawyers representing both Nahel's family and the police officer did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
The incident has raised significant concerns around police conduct and accountability in France, a matter that continues to provoke public discourse and unrest in various communities.
Nahel's death has been a catalyst for broader discussions regarding policing practices and systemic issues within law enforcement in France, particularly in urban regions.
