Victor Wembanyama, a rising NBA star, garners significant attention as San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers prepare for Paris games.
NANTERRE, France — The Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs have arrived in Paris to participate in the upcoming NBA Paris Games scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.
Officially, the Pacers will serve as the home team for the first match on Thursday, while the Spurs will take on this role on Saturday.
The event, however, is largely overshadowed by the presence of Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs' rising star known for his impressive basketball prowess.
Wembanyama, who stands at 7 feet 4 inches, has captured the imaginations of fans worldwide and is expected to become an NBA All-Star for the first time this season.
He previously earned the title of NBA rookie of the year.
The Paris games coincide with 'Wemby Week,' a series of celebrations centered around the Parisian native.
The Spurs traveled to Paris from Miami, where they recently played a game.
Upon arrival, they conducted a light training session at the Nanterre court where Wembanyama began his professional career at age 15 in the French league.
"It was even a bit surreal to see all my teammates in this arena where I spent so much time," Wembanyama remarked after the session.
Ticket demand for the Paris games reached unprecedented levels, with tickets for the events selling out within a day.
Some ticket packages, featuring experiences such as photo opportunities with the Larry O’Brien Trophy, remain available at a premium.
Wembanyama has also orchestrated a treasure hunt, providing fans with opportunities to win tickets by finding QR codes hidden in cities such as Paris, Lyon, Lille, Marseille, and Bordeaux.
The San Antonio Spurs have historical ties to France, previously strengthened by French players Tony Parker and Boris Diaw.
These connections are further bolstered by the team’s collaboration with Paris Saint-Germain during this week-long event.
Wembanyama continues to captivate fans following his formidable performance in the Paris Olympic Games last summer, where he helped secure a silver medal for France against the United States.
The current games are being held in the same venue where the Olympic final took place.
As part of his homecoming, Wembanyama is focusing on engaging with his community, but notes that game days will remain dedicated solely to the sport.
Pacers players, including Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner, expressed admiration for Wembanyama’s influence and are enthusiastic about their visit to Paris.
Spurs interim coach Mitch
Johnson emphasized the importance of playing in one's home country and acknowledged the unique experience awaiting Wembanyama and the attending French fans.
The NBA Paris Games, featuring these matchups, promise to draw an enthusiastic crowd eager to witness Wembanyama's play, with his presence expected to electrify the already vibrant atmosphere in Paris.
