Major European publications cease activity on X, citing value misalignment and misinformation concerns.
Numerous media organizations across Europe, including the French daily Libération, have recently ceased their activity on the social media platform X, which is owned by entrepreneur
Elon Musk.
This decision comes amid growing concerns over misinformation and the platform's alignment with their editorial values.
As of January 21, Libération, with a following of 3.5 million on X, announced its decision to stop sharing content on the platform.
The newspaper's statement emphasized that maintaining this partnership was no longer compatible with its core values, directing its audience to follow its content on other social networks such as BlueSky.
Libération's withdrawal is part of a broader trend in which several French and international media outlets have decided to exit the platform.
Among these are prominent names such as Ouest France, Sud Ouest, Mediapart, La Voix du Nord, and Le Monde within France.
Abroad, similar departures have been noted, reflecting a collective stance on issues related to the integrity of information shared on the platform.
The exodus of these media outlets coincides with the impending inauguration of
Donald Trump as the President of the United States, a figure closely associated with
Elon Musk.
This association has further fueled concerns over the platform's perceived role in propagating misinformation and exerting undue influence over public discourse, particularly in Europe.
Over recent weeks, a number of institutions, public bodies, and notable personalities have also announced their disengagement from X. These actions highlight a prevailing unease regarding the influence of the platform in shaping or potentially skewing public discussions through the dissemination of unverified information.
The retreat from X by significant media players underscores an ongoing evaluation by news organizations of their digital strategies and their commitment to responsible journalism.
The trend reflects wider concerns about the role of digital platforms in information dissemination and the importance of aligning online activity with journalistic integrity.
