Marine Le Pen Faces Legal Setback Amidst Political Campaigns
The National Rally mobilizes in support of Le Pen following a court ruling, with counter-campaigns emerging from Young People with Macron.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally (RN), is facing significant political challenges following a recent ruling by the Paris correctional court, which imposed an immediate ineligibility penalty that jeopardizes her chances of running in the 2027 presidential elections.
In response to this decision, the RN has initiated a public campaign featuring the slogan "Sauvons la démocratie, soutenons Marine" (Let's Save Democracy, Support Marine).
In reaction to the RN's campaign, Young People with Macron (Jam), the youth branch of the ruling party Renaissance, is reportedly preparing to distribute 25,000 posters as a counter-response.
These posters are designed in the color scheme of the RN's advertising, featuring a quote from Le Pen dated April 2013 that states, "What should happen is that those who have been convicted should be rendered ineligible for life." The campaign features an image of Le Pen leaving the courtroom following her trial in November, as highlighted by Ambroise Méjean, the head of Jam.
The poster illustrates how Le Pen has previously advocated for lifelong ineligibility for convicted officials, suggesting an inconsistency in her current claims of victimhood within the system.
In addition to the poster campaign, the RN has launched an online petition to rally support for Le Pen, who describes her recent conviction as a "nuclear bomb" unleashed by the political establishment.
The court's ruling includes a four-year prison sentence, two years of which are to be served with an electronic bracelet, alongside a fine of 100,000 euros and a five-year provisional ineligibility.
In statements delivered before RN deputies, Le Pen criticized her conviction as a scandal against democracy, asserting that it exemplifies judicial interference in electoral processes.
Emphasizing her determination to confront these legal challenges, she remarked that such actions indicate that the RN is poised for electoral success.
Le Pen condemned the judicial process as a "shame for our country" and characterized it as a threat to public order, demonstrating her refusal to back down amid the legal turmoil.
