Grenoble Bar Explosion: Over Ten Injured in Grenade Attack
An explosion at a bar in Grenoble, France, has left multiple individuals wounded, prompting investigations into potential links to organized crime.
A grenade was thrown into a bar in the Olympic Village neighborhood of Grenoble, France, on Wednesday evening, injuring more than ten people, some of whom sustained serious injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time.
Grenoble's Mayor Eric Piolle condemned the act, describing it as a 'criminal act of unprecedented violence' and extending gratitude to the emergency services for their rapid response.
Reports indicate that the attack was carried out by an individual who entered the bar, threw the grenade without uttering a word, and fled the scene.
Catherine Seguin, the Prefect of Isère, reported that among the wounded, several were in serious condition.
Deputy Prosecutor François Touret-de-Courcy, speaking at the scene, emphasized that while the attack constituted 'extreme violence,' there were no immediate indications to suggest a terrorist motive.
Instead, he noted potential connections to a 'settling of scores,' possibly linked to drug trafficking.
Investigators are pursuing leads that include reports of the suspect being armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle at the time of the incident.
The identity and whereabouts of the assailant remain unknown.
In response to the incident, French Health Minister Yannick Neuder expressed his condemnation via social media and is scheduled to visit victims at the Grenoble University Hospital.
Additionally, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is set to visit the city on Friday as part of his previously arranged engagements.
