Gerard Depardieu's Sexual Assault Trial Commences in Paris

Gerard Depardieu's Sexual Assault Trial Commences in Paris

The veteran French actor faces allegations from two women on a film set as empowerment movements continue to address misconduct.
The trial of French actor Gerard Depardieu commenced on Monday at the Paris Criminal Court, where he faces charges of sexual assault.

The 76-year-old is accused of assaulting two women during the filming of "Les Volets Verts" ("The Green Shutters"), a project directed by Jean Becker in 2021.

The allegations involve a 54-year-old set dresser who claims Depardieu cornered her in a corridor and engaged in inappropriate physical contact, and a 34-year-old assistant to the director who has made similar accusations.

Both women initiated proceedings against Depardieu in February and March 2024, respectively.

This case is particularly notable as it is the first of more than 20 accusations against Depardieu to advance to trial amid broader societal discussions following France's #MeToo movement.

The trial is expected to last for two days, with Depardieu facing potential penalties of up to five years in prison and fines reaching €75,000 ($81,600) should he be convicted.

Claude Vincent, the lawyer representing one of the alleged victims, expressed concerns about how Depardieu’s defense will address the civil parties in court, emphasizing the importance of the trial taking place for justice.

Additionally, Depardieu has been accused of raping actress Charlotte Arnould in 2020, a case that remains open.

He has denied these allegations and previously asserted in an open letter to the media that he has never abused a woman.

The actor has had a tumultuous public image, previous encounters with law enforcement include charges related to drunk driving, public urination on an airplane, and altercations.

Jeremie Assous, Depardieu’s lawyer, has categorized the accusations as "completely fabricated" and remarked on the lack of direct witnesses to the events in question.

Assous stated that the trial would provide an opportunity to confront all accusations with factual evidence, asserting the claim that all allegations against his client are false.

He also highlighted that Depardieu's courtroom appearances would have restrictions due to health concerns; the actor has been managing diabetes for over 25 years and has undergone quadruple bypass surgery.

Court accommodations have been made for Depardieu's health needs, including limiting his hours in court to six per day with allocated breaks.

Gerard Depardieu is a prominent figure in French cinema, having starred in over 200 films throughout his career.
