Attal gathers European lawmakers in Paris to reinforce support for Ukraine as tensions with Russia escalate.
On March 24, 2025, Gabriel Attal, Secretary General of the Renaissance party, convened approximately thirty Members of the European Parliament from the Renew group, along with representatives from Hungary and Slovakia, in Paris for a summit focused on democracy and liberties.
The gathering aimed to express a united determination to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia and to advocate for the establishment of a stronger European defense framework.
Attal characterized the summit as a significant step for European democratic forces and a necessary response to what he described as a 'reactionary tide' linked to far-right movements worldwide, which he accuses of being bolstered by the administration of former U.S. President
Donald Trump.
While the summit’s impact is primarily symbolic, it is positioned strategically just days before a European Council summit intended to reaffirm the commitment of the 27 EU member states to Ukraine.
In his remarks, Attal emphasized the time for action, warning of the potential risks stemming from the perceived alignment between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that their partnership could detrimentally affect Europe’s democratic integrity.
Attendees included Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, who echoed Attal’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of collective European action at this critical juncture in international relations.
The summit seeks to reinforce the resolve of European leaders to stand with Ukraine as it faces military aggression from Russia, reflecting an ongoing effort to solidify political unity within the European Union in the context of rising geopolitical challenges.
