French Schoolgirl Detained for Threatening Teacher Over Charlie Hebdo Caricatures
Incident follows a national commemoration of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks in France
A 13-year-old schoolgirl in Doubs, France, has been detained after allegedly issuing a death threat to her teacher who showed Charlie Hebdo caricatures during a civics lesson.
The images were shown in the context of marking the 10th anniversary of the 2015 attack on the satirical magazine's office, according to Montbéliard prosecutor Paul-Édouard Lallois.
The student reportedly told the teacher that another individual intended to harm him because of the caricatures.
The teacher, concerned for his safety, filed a complaint, leading to the girl's detention.
Despite asserting that her comment was a 'bad joke,' she will appear in February before a judicial representative to receive a formal warning.
Minister of Education Elisabeth Borne expressed her support for the teacher, emphasizing immediate governmental response, including legal notification to the prosecutor and the provision of protection for the teacher.
The situation triggered a broader state response to ensure the safety of educators, reflecting heightened sensitivities in the aftermath of previous incidents, such as the 2020 murder of teacher Samuel Paty.
Prosecutor Lallois noted that the student and her family have no known links to radicalization and are not familiar to the justice system.
He emphasized that while the girl did not intend genuine harm, the nature of her statements could incite fear.
The authorities have mobilized promptly in light of past tragedies linked to similar issues.
