French Legislative Debate on Emergency Reconstruction Law for Mayotte
French government proposes emergency law to expedite rebuilding Mayotte after Cyclone Chido devastation.
On January 13, the French Minister for Overseas Territories, Manuel Valls, was evaluated by the National Assembly regarding the proposed emergency law aimed at reconstructing Mayotte.
This initiative follows the severe damage caused by Cyclone Chido on December 14. Since Monday, parliamentarians have been discussing the government's proposal designed to accelerate the reconstruction efforts on the archipelago.
This legislative effort seeks to empower the executive branch to bypass certain building regulations, thereby facilitating rapid reconstruction.
According to Minister Valls, the law aims to 'lay the foundation stones of Mayotte's renewal.'
The proposed law includes provisions allowing the government to issue ordinances that would establish a singular operator responsible for coordinating reconstruction activities.
Other measures in the legislation focus on enabling the swift setting up of temporary housing solutions for displaced residents, addressing the immediate shelter needs of Mayotte's population.
This legislative debate is a preliminary step, occurring two weeks prior to discussions regarding potential restrictions on birthright citizenship, as advocated by the political group Les Républicains.
