Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has begun serving a five-year prison sentence following his conviction on corruption and influence-peddling charges.

The ruling makes Sarkozy the first former leader in France’s modern history to be incarcerated.

He was found guilty of attempting to bribe a judge in exchange for confidential information about a separate investigation.

Sarkozy continues to deny wrongdoing and has vowed to appeal the verdict.
