Emmanuel Macron Faces Criticism Over Selective Indignation Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The French President's swift response to a humanitarian boat interception contrasts with his silence on the imprisonment of Algerian writer Boualem Sansal.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, is under scrutiny following his rapid response to the interception of a humanitarian vessel headed for Gaza, which carried six French nationals, including Eurodeputy Rima Hassan.

Just hours after the Israeli army rerouted the _Madleen_, a ship organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition aimed at breaking the Gaza blockade, Macron called for the immediate return of the French citizens onboard.

This quick reaction has drawn criticism from various users on social media, particularly regarding the lack of a similar public commitment to advocate for Boualem Sansal, a Franco-Algerian writer imprisoned in Algeria since mid-November 2023. Sansal, who is 80 years old and suffers from health issues, was sentenced to five years in prison for comments made during an interview in which he asserted that Algeria had historically inherited territories from Morocco during French colonial rule.

His appeal is scheduled to be heard on June 24, 2025.

Prominent social media figures have voiced their concerns, with some comparing the urgency shown for Rima Hassan to the apparent indifference towards Sansal's plight.

One user remarked that they would have appreciated a similar assertive stance for Sansal, labeling him a political prisoner due to his dissent against the regime of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the current Algerian president.

Literary figures and supporters of Sansal have also criticized Macron's inaction.

Notable writer and philosopher Pascal Bruckner expressed disappointment, stating that Macron could have strongly demanded Sansal's return to France but had chosen not to intervene.

Similarly, essayist Ferghane Azihari highlighted the disparity in the president's responses, pointing out that Sansal has been detained amid what he described as a parody of justice, while French diplomacy appears to cater to authoritarian regimes.

Azihari and others voiced concerns about the French government's approach to foreign relations, particularly in the context of Algeria, where they allege that human rights violations persist.

Macron's quick condemnation of Israel’s actions regarding the humanitarian boat was juxtaposed with a more subdued approach to the situation in Algeria.

The _Madleen_ was reportedly intercepted by the Israeli navy as it attempted to reach Gaza, despite a standing order prohibiting such voyages.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs later announced that the vessel had been redirected to Israel, where its passengers would be expected to return to their home countries.

The humanitarian efforts to break the blockade of Gaza remain a contentious issue in international relations, drawing significant responses from various governments and organizations.
