With a deadline looming, the U.S. President indicates that a deal for the sale of TikTok's U.S. operations may be imminent.
As the deadline for TikTok's potential ban in the United States approaches, President
Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement for the sale of the popular social media platform's American operations.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on March 31, 2025, Trump stated, "There will be a deal for TikTok," emphasizing that there is significant interest from potential buyers.
TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, faces a deadline of April 5, 2025, to divest its U.S. business or risk being banned in the country, following a law enacted in 2024 aimed at protecting national security.
On January 20, 2025, Trump granted ByteDance a 75-day period to complete the sale.
Several American entities, including the AI startup Perplexity AI and Project Liberty, led by Frank McCourt, owner of Olympique de Marseille, are reportedly interested in purchasing TikTok, though no formal commitment to sell has been communicated by ByteDance.
Trump noted that discussions have also been held with Chinese representatives regarding the matter, indicating a potential for broader negotiations.
The call for a sale follows Trump's previous attempts, in 2020, to ban TikTok during his first term.
However, his stance has shifted, and he has acknowledged the platform's popularity among younger voters, suggesting that his support could impact his party's performance in future elections.
