Christian Brueckner Released from German Prison after Serving Unrelated Sentence
Prime suspect in Madeleine McCann case freed under strict conditions but not charged in disappearance
Christian Brueckner, the German man identified in 2020 as the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann, was released on September 17, 2025, after serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of a seventy-two-year-old American woman in Portugal’s Algarve.
German authorities imposed several conditions on his release: surrendering his passport, wearing an electronic ankle monitor, registering a residence, and obtaining permission to travel.
Although he remains under investigation in Germany as a suspect in what prosecutors treat as a murder inquiry, no formal charges have been filed in connection with McCann’s disappearance.
Brueckner has consistently denied involvement.
Law enforcement from Germany, Britain, and Portugal continue to pursue evidence, including information from mobile phone data and past presence in the Praia da Luz area, though recent searches have yielded no conclusive new findings.
