Telegram to receive revenue share from xAI subscriptions, as the partnership aims to leverage Telegram's extensive user base.
xAI, a technology company known for its innovations in artificial intelligence, has entered into a partnership with Telegram, a popular messaging platform.
Under the terms of the agreement, Telegram will receive an investment of $300 million as well as 50% of the revenue generated from paid subscriptions to xAI's services accessed through its application.
Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, announced this partnership in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday.
Durov indicated that xAI's service, called Grok, will be available starting this summer.
However, specific details regarding the launch have not been disclosed.
Efforts to obtain additional information from Telegram have not elicited a response.
The partnership aims to strengthen xAI's reach, particularly since it has recently expanded by acquiring the platform previously known as X in late March.
Grok's integration into Telegram is expected to tap into its vast user base, which Durov estimated to exceed one billion users.
This collaboration comes at a time when major players in the generative AI space are striving to enhance the adoption of their respective technologies to achieve a critical mass and recoup significant investments.
Grok was launched in November 2023, entering the market after established competitors such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and Gemini from Google.
Currently, Grok is accessible through X, albeit with limitations for non-paying users.
The service offers three subscription plans, with the highest tier priced at $40 per month or $395 annually.
In a separate development, Pavel Durov is facing legal scrutiny in France, where judges have initiated investigations into various alleged violations associated with content moderation failures on Telegram.
He is currently under judicial supervision pending the conclusion of the investigation and a potential trial.
