Identification Efforts Continue Following Air India Flight 171 Crash
Air India’s Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad results in at least 279 fatalities, marking a significant aviation disaster.
A tragic aviation incident involving Air India flight 171 has resulted in the deaths of at least 279 individuals.
This marks the deadliest aviation disaster globally since 2014. The Boeing 787 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, bound for London, on Thursday.
Recovery efforts have seen authorities identify 114 victims through DNA samples provided by their relatives as of Monday evening, according to local officials.
Approximately fifty bodies have been returned to their families, facilitating the commencement of funerals both within Ahmedabad and beyond.
In the Anand district, family members of Kinal Mistry, a 24-year-old London restaurant manager, held her cremation, conducted in accordance with Hindu customs.
Her father, Suresh, expressed deep sorrow, reflecting on how she delayed her return to the UK from June 7 to June 12.
Many relatives of the victims have voiced their frustration regarding the prolonged identification process.
One individual, Rinal Christian, 23, noted the lack of updates after being told that the process would take forty-eight hours.
He lamented the loss of his older brother, who was the sole breadwinner for the family.
In response, Dr. Rajnish Patel from the civil hospital in Ahmedabad stated that the identification process is meticulous and must be conducted with care.
The Air India flight, carrying 242 individuals—230 passengers and 12 crew members—tragically crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad one minute after departing at 13:39 local time (08:09 GMT).
The passengers included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.
Remarkably, one passenger, seated near an emergency exit at the front, survived the disaster, which also resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least 38 individuals on the ground.
Investigation teams have recovered the second black box of the aircraft, which records cockpit conversations.
The first box, documenting flight parameters such as speed, altitude, trajectory, and engine data, was retrieved intact from the aircraft's tail.
Preliminary reports indicated that the pilot issued a distress call immediately after takeoff, before the aircraft subsequently crashed and ignited on impact.
The Indian Minister of Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, assured that thorough investigations would be conducted to ascertain the causes of the crash.
Notably, this incident represents the first crash involving a Boeing 787 since it entered service in 2011. Meanwhile, another Air India Dreamliner, which had recently taken off from Hong Kong and was en route to New Delhi, had to return due to an unspecified technical issue.
