Heightened Security Measures in France Amid Israel-Iran Conflict

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau calls for increased vigilance following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian sites.
Bruno Retailleau, the French Minister of the Interior, has directed prefects across the nation to enhance security measures in response to escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran.

In a telegram issued on Friday, following a significant Israeli military strike on Iranian military and nuclear installations, Retailleau emphasized the need for heightened vigilance particularly at places of worship, public gatherings, and sites associated with Israeli and American interests.

The ongoing conflict was ignited by Israel's extensive airstrikes on Iranian targets, which Israeli officials claim were necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

In retaliation, Iran launched dozens of ballistic missiles towards Israel, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

In his message, Retailleau noted, 'It is essential to pay particular attention to all sites that could be targeted by acts of terrorism or malice from foreign powers.' Specific emphasis was placed on securing places of worship, schools, and public institutions, as well as ensuring a visible police presence in areas with large crowds, especially during peak times for public gatherings, cultural events, and festive activities.

The Minister also called for the mobilization of intelligence services, municipal police, and the national 'Sentinelle' security operation, which deploys military forces to protect sensitive locations throughout France.

President Emmanuel Macron announced an expansion of the Sentinelle operation as part of a broader strategy to guard against potential threats to national security.

The terrorist threat level in France has been a subject of concern, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions.

The Interior Minister's directives highlight a proactive approach to countering potential risks and ensuring the safety of communities, including within the Jewish community and organizations associated with Israeli interests.

Retailleau's instructions included maintaining ongoing surveillance of individuals connected with Iran, especially those of Iranian nationality, and enhancing enforcement against irregular immigration as part of a comprehensive security strategy.

A meeting was scheduled to take place on Saturday evening to discuss and implement these enhanced security measures across the country.
