Controversial Remarks by Parisian Council Member Lead to Criticism and Apologies
Lila Djellali's comments invoking Charles de Gaulle spark backlash and a disciplinary review.
In Paris, the political landscape has been shaken following remarks made by Lila Djellali, an environmentalist council member of the 20th arrondissement, during a local council meeting.
Djellali attempted to evoke a statement attributed to former President Charles de Gaulle, stating, "The day we gather the Jews in one place, we fear they could become dominators and do the unthinkable." The statement, however, was widely criticized as antisemitic and was not an accurate replication of de Gaulle's original words.
In a 1967 speech, de Gaulle indeed referenced fears related to Jews as a "dominant people," but his original phrase was significantly different and articulated in the context of the geopolitical tensions of the time amid the Six-Day War.
Following the backlash from her statement, Djellali issued an apology, acknowledging her mistake.
She admitted, "I should not have repeated this quotation, which embodies all the stereotypes of antisemitism, essentializing Jews.
I commit to training to ensure I do not make this mistake again." Djellali has since stepped back from her official duties.
The Ecologist party, to which Djellali belongs, announced that a disciplinary review will be initiated in light of her comments.
The party's leadership expressed strong condemnation of her remarks and reiterated their commitment to combating antisemitism.
Caroline Yadan, a member of the French National Assembly representing citizens abroad, highlighted the severity of the situation, indicating her intention to refer the matter to judicial authorities.
Djellali's comments have ignited widespread debate regarding political language and the responsibilities of public officials in France.
This incident poignantly adds to ongoing conversations about antisemitism and discourse surrounding Jewish communities in contemporary political contexts.
