AHS names of 1920s...
Marjorie Hayward (1925),
Wilma Lee (1926),
Elanor Sterba (1927),
Vera Strasbaugh (1928),
Mary Barbara Korff (1923),
Eloise Ferguson Faull (1925),
Addie McGuire (1926).
1923 --- The earliest graduate of the group is Mary Barbara
Korff who graduated in 1923. Mary Barbara is best known for her musical
contributions to the community over the past many years. She regularly
entertained the Woods County Senior Citizens with her piano skills until
recently.
1925 --- Marjorie Hayward, Alva, and Eloise 'Dude' Ferguson
Faull, Georgia, are two who graduated in 1925. Dude was a member of
the national basketball championship team (The Goldmiddies). While
her good friend was in NY playing the Croton-0n-the-Hudson team for
the national title, Marjorie remembers sitting in the cafe listening
to reports of the game on the radio. 'Dude' Faull, believed to be
the only remaining member of the National Championship Goldmiddies
team, will be in Alva for the reunion festivities. Faull resides in
Georgia.
1926 --- Wilma Lee and Addie McGuire were members of the 1926
graduating class. Addie's favorite memories of her high school days
are of the excitement surrounding the Goldmiddie's Championship. They
had a snake dance around the square with the whole school involved.
Wilma is still active in education as a mentor with the Alva Youth Summit
and a volunteer at Share Convalescent Home. She has lots of fund memories
from her school days, one of which she says involved a classmate's planting
the class flag on top of the school's flag pole. Wilma said there was
a continual contest between the classes of whose flag would fly on top
of the extremely tall pole the longest. A classmae promised to get their
flag up and keep it up for a long time. He took their flag up and took
something else up with him. He took the others flag down, put their
flag up, then put axle grease all over the pole on his way down so nobody
could get up there.
1927 --- Eleanor Sterba graduated in 1927. She remains active
in her church, Firt Presbytarian, serving in many areas including
media liaison.
1928 --- The 1928 graduated is Vera Strasbaugh who is active
in the Cherokee Strip Museum Board and the Woods County Senior Citizens.
During her high school days, Vera was one of the AHS cheerleaders
yelling loudest for N. J. "Bud" Strasbaugh, a grade ahead
of her and a member of the football team who later became her husband.
One of Vera's favorite memories revolves around the rivalry between
Alva and Cherokee teams. They had an assembly before plalying Cherokee
and had built a casket with Cherokee in it and burned it. Cherokee
beat Alva unmercifully that night.
There were stories shared of some of the boys coming to school with
a Mohawk haircut which recieved a much less than enthusiastic reception
from the administration. The boys had to wear ball caps until their
hair grew out.
Other stories of skipping class, turning back wataches to give them
more time out of school, and other mischievous pranks surfaced which
they swore they would deny if they were quoted.
