Notes for John James Hurt:  Source Info from Ersel Hedrick and Vernon & Clara Case:  John James Hurt and Mary Markvicka had 7 children and they were all born in the old country (Austria). [Received source of info from Ersel Hedrick in 1997.]

According to Jeanine Baringer, John Hurt (her G-Grandfather) came to America with his brother Anton and an unmarried nephew, Vaclav Hurt. Supposedly, when John Hurt and family moved to Oklahoma, others moved to Minnesota and others stayed in Nebraska.

John & Mary and Brother (Anton) are from Ujezdec village, town of Kutna Hora, County of Caslov in Czech. They came to America 14 March 1876 and settled in Posen (Farewell), Nebraska. All homesteaded land close to each other. Around 1896 the family split up and went to Oklahoma, except for a son Anton & his wife Cecila that went to Hallock, MN for 3 yrs to homestead and then went to Oklahoma for 3 yrs and then went back to MN.

Info from Linda Hurt and "Czech Immigration Passenger Lists" New York Passenger Lists 1870 - 1880 by Leo Baca, Vol. V pg 60, privately published, copyright 1993 - HURT, Johann 41, Anna 14, Maria 9, Johann 8, Barbara 6, Franz 4, Anton 2, Maria 39, Bohemia; Ship Weser, 14 March 1876.

In the book "Nebraska, Kansas Czech Settlers" by Margie Sobotka on pg 131, for Howard County Kelso district; Mat. Mrkvicka from Lestina, Caslav, Ant. Hurt, Vac. Hurt, Jos. Hurt, and Fr. Hurt.

Ant. and Fr. are from Ujezdec, Kutna Hora, Caslav and Vac. and Jos. are from Dubina, Caslav. They all owned farm land in Howard County. There is also a Jan Francl from Dubina in that district (precinct) and Vaclav married a Francl girl.

Info from Jeanine Baringer showed John James Birth date as May 16, 1832 and death as 1915. According to the 1890 Census, Mary Markvicka was born in June of 1839.

Notes for Anton Hurt:  Anton came to America from French Bohemia in 1876 with Brother John James and nephew, Vaclav Hurt and settled near Farewell, NE.   Kuta Hora, Claslav, Ujezdec were like our cities, than towns and then villages according to size. The villages were 2000 and less people.

Notes for Frank Hurt:  According to Jeanine, "Frank Hurt was a brother to our great-great-grandfathers, John and Anton. Vaclav was Frank's son. According to Vaclav's marriage record, his mother's maiden name was Anna Cynowa. Frank and Anna didin't come to the US. "

Notes for Vaclav Hurt:  A Great Grandson of Vaclav Hurt states that small pox had killed many, mostly children. It wasn't uncommon to come home from burying one child and find another child had passed away when one was gone. This was about the time that the family split up because of farm depression, grasshoppers, and disease. John & Mary Hurt and all of their children, grandchildren went to Okla. because they heard there was land opening up for homesteading. John's brother (Anton & Louise Hurt) stayed in Nebraska.  Vlacav Hurt was a nephew of John James Hurt and Anton Hurt that came to America approx. 1876.  Vlaclav Hurt married and his relatives are still living in Farewell (Posen), NE.

5. Joesph P.3 Hurt (John James2, Unknown1) was born March 19, 1856 in Dubina, Caslav County, Austria (Czech), and died March 18, 1936 in Major Co., OK, Orion Cemetery. He married (1) Anna Wallman. He married (2) Hannah Alice. Marsh Abt. 1910.

Notes for Joesph P. Hurt:  Joseph was the oldest of seven children. He came to this country when he was 19 years old from Austria. He is buried on the Old Hurt Place located 2 miles west, 1/4 mile southeast of Orion Cemetery, Major Co., OK. Joseph was a retired farmer. Died 3:15AM Mar 18, 1936. See certificate of death. He was 79 years 11 months 29 days old.  1900 census has birth date for Joseph as Sept. 1855. 1900 census in Woods County, Bishop township, Oklahoma, taken on 7th June 1900 showed Joseph and Anna with seven children.

Notes for Anna Wallman:  Anna was killed by lightening in 1902. She is buried in the Hurt Cemetery located 2 miles West, 1/4 mile southeast of Orion Cemetery on the old Hurt Homestead now owned by Paul & Betty Martin in Major County, OK. The Cases had a tombstone erected on the Hurt farm for those buried there. The names on the stone are John and Mary Markvicka Hurt and Anna (the first wife of Joseph). Several children [Bukowski (3), Hurt (1), Holub (2), Hamilton (2)] of family members and one was a cowboy drifter [Louie Sedlacher] who just happened by and died while there.

Notes for Hannah Alice Marsh:  Hannah married Joseph Hurt and they lived in the Orion and Fairview Communities.  Joseph's second wife after the death of his first wife in 1902.  They were married later in life after their families were raised.  Info from Ersel Hedrick - Hannah Marsh Kachel had a son by her first husband. That son was Albert Kachel, her youngest son, was 12 years old when Hannah married Joseph Hurt. Ersel Hedrick always called him Grandpa Joe and that was the only grandfather she ever knew.  1910 Census shows Albert and Henry Kachel as step sons of Joseph P. Hurt.

6. Barbara Carrie3 Hurt (John James2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1872 in Czech., and died Abt. 1941 in Cottage Grove, Oregon. She married Joseph Stanley Bukowski 1890 in Grand Island, NE.

Notes for Barbara Carrie Hurt:  1900 census in Woods County, Bishop Township, Oklahoma, taken on 7th June 1900 showed Joseph and Barbara with 5 children. 1910 census, 4/25/1910 shows Barbara with 5 children. When her children were all grown, Barbara went back to Nebraska to make her home in St. Paul, NE. A few years later she and son Frank moved to Oregon where three of her children were already living. After Joseph left for Nebraska and Canada, Barbara and family continued to live on the homestead in Oklahoma. The baby (Louie) was born and died within a few months time. Finally with help from some of her neighbors and relatives, she and the children went back to Nebraska where she got her three oldest sons. They rented a house in St. Paul, Nebraska, and she and the older children all worked in a cannery. After some time she decided her children would be better off on the farm, so she took her family and once again returned to the Oklahoma homestead to live.  1895 - Joseph and Barbara and their young children (Mary, Phillip and Edward) left their home in Sherman County, Nebraska and set out for the newly opened Oklahoma territory. They traveled in a caravan in covered wagons with Mr. and Mrs. John Hurt, and brother joseph, Johnny, and Frank Hurt families. Others were Jim Holubs, Divarak family, and possibly others. All these families came from Sherman or Howard Counties in Nebraska.  The boys worked out for the neighbors, pulling broomcorn for as little as $.50 per day.

Notes for Joseph Stanley Bukowski:  After a few years of poor crops andother hardships in Oklahoma, Joseph decided this was not his kind of country. He took his three oldest sons (Phillip, Edward and Charley) and went back to Nebraska. By this time two more children (Leo and Anna) had been born. and another baby on the way. Joseph left his sons (Phillip, Edward and Charley) with his mother in Nebraska and went to Canada where he estabilished a new home and never returned to the US, except for a short visit or two to see his children. He passed away in Saskatchewan, Canada, September 1942, leaving a family there.

Marriage Notes for Barbara Hurt and Joseph Bukowski:  1910 census has Barbara listed as a widow. But her husband deserted her and left for Nebraska and then Canada and never came back to Oklahoma. Barbara and Joseph married in Spring of 1890. Barbara migrated to US from Czech. when she was four years old (according to Alice Shook).

Notes for Frank James Hurt:  1900 census in Woods County, Bishop Township, Oklahoma, taken on 7th June 1900 showed Frank J. and Maggie with 4 children. 1910 census in Major County, Bishop Township, Oklahoma, 4/25/1910 showed Frank and Maggie with 7 children, she states she has had 8.

i. Clara4 Hurt. She married Vernon Case.

Notes for Clara Hurt:  According to Ersel Hedrick, in July 1997 Clara and Vernon Case still live on the Hurt place and have lived their all their life. It is located 6 miles east of Chester and just about 3 1/2 miles north on the blacktop road, or 1/2 mile west of the Orion Cemetery and 2 1/2 miles north on the blacktop road. they live on the West side of the road in a white frame house.

8. Anton3 Hurt (John James2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1873 in Ujezdec, Kutna Hora, Caslov, Czech.. He married Cecilia Przybyeszeski February 21, 1895 in St. Paul, Howard Co., NE, daughter of Frank Przybyeszeski and Mary Franskavek.

Notes for Anton Hurt:  According to Jeanine Baringer in Minnesota, When Anton's father (John James) moved to Oklahoma, Anton moved to Minnesota, and John James brother (Anton) stayed in Nebraska. Anton & Cecila went to Minnesota while the rest of family went to Oklahoma. Anton married Cecila and homesteaded in Hallock, MN. They proved their homestead in 3 yrs and went to Oklahoma and stayed 3 yrs and then the Red Lake Indian Reservation opened up at Thief Rivers Falls, MN . They came back to MN.  Anton was twenty-two years old and Cecilia was 19 years when married.

Notes for Jerry Joseph Hurt:  According to independence, MO census in 1920, Jerry was age 46 and wife (Anna) was 38 years old. they had eight children living with them. Their youngest son, Daniel, was born in 1924. Jerry's father, Anton, was also shown at age=77.  1880 Census, NE - Jerry Joseph Hurt was 8 yrs old.

Notes for Mary Bukowski:  Mary and Sam both died in Summer of 1966. Mary (Alice Shook's mother) cooked and cleaned in the Old Floyd's Hotel in Fairview, Okla. for $2.00 per week when she was only fourteen years old.
